As body mass decreases, energy expenditure decreases. Some of this is simple math — less tissue to maintain. Some is adaptive: the body reduces spontaneous movement, downshifts thyroid activity slightly, and increases hunger hormones. This is real but usually less dramatic than internet narratives suggest, typically in the range of 5–15% below what the math would predict.
How to work with it
- Prioritize resistance training — muscle preserves metabolic rate
- Use diet breaks (1–2 weeks at maintenance) every 8–12 weeks
- Track NEAT (steps) — the first thing that drops when energy is low
- Sleep enough — sleep debt suppresses metabolic rate independently
- Set realistic pacing — 0.5–1% body weight per week, not more
