Insulin is the hormone that tells cells to accept glucose from the bloodstream. Insulin resistance means those cells stop responding well to that signal. The pancreas compensates by producing more insulin, which works for a while and eventually stops working — that transition point is where blood sugar starts to rise and prediabetes becomes visible on lab work.
How to see it on lab work
- Fasting insulin (often normal ranges are too loose — under 10 μIU/mL is preferable)
- HOMA-IR (fasting glucose × fasting insulin / 405) — target under 2.0
- Fasting glucose and HbA1c
- Triglycerides / HDL ratio — a rough surrogate
What consistently improves it
- Resistance training — the single most powerful intervention for glucose uptake
- Loss of visceral fat, especially around the liver and pancreas
- Sleep of 7–9 hours (poor sleep destroys insulin sensitivity in a single night)
- Walking after meals, especially the largest meal of the day
- Protein-forward eating patterns; reducing refined carbs and industrial oils
- Consistent daily movement — NEAT matters more than most people believe
“Insulin resistance is not a life sentence. I've watched clients reverse it entirely with 4–6 months of consistent training, sleep, and honest nutrition. The body wants to work; it just needs the right inputs.”
“When a client comes in with prediabetes or classic insulin resistance markers, I tell them the same thing every time: this is the most changeable metabolic condition in medicine. The interventions are unsexy — lift, sleep, walk, eat protein. They also work more reliably than almost anything in the pharmacy.”
