Subcutaneous fat sits under the skin and is metabolically fairly inert. Visceral fat surrounds internal organs, secretes inflammatory signals, and directly drives insulin resistance, hypertension, and cardiovascular risk.
How to estimate it without a DEXA
- Waist circumference — men under 40 inches, women under 35 (rough thresholds)
- Waist-to-height ratio under 0.5
- How firm vs. soft the abdomen feels (a rough proxy)
What reduces it fastest
- Loss of overall body fat via a modest energy deficit
- Resistance training + zone 2 cardio combo
- Reduced fructose and industrial oil intake
- Sleep — poor sleep preferentially adds visceral fat
- Stress reduction — cortisol drives visceral accumulation
“Clients often lose visceral fat before the scale moves much. That's why waist circumference and how you feel are better early signals than weight.”
“This is one of my favorite conversations to have because it reframes progress. If a client's waist drops an inch in six weeks but the scale hasn't moved much, that is a huge metabolic win. Understanding which fat you're actually losing is empowering.”
